It’s time to face the tournament hosts: The United States U-18 National Team will face Finland in the 2024 IIHF U-18 World Championship preliminary round on Tuesday, April 30 (4/30/2024) at Metro Areena in Espoo, Finland.

Team USA is undefeated so far as they take on host nation and international hockey rival, Finland, on Tuesday. The Americans are trying to become the IIHF U-18 contest’s first repeat winners since the USA themselves did it in 2014 and 2015.

Team USA has been dominant in the tournament’s preliminary round, holding the highest single team score and highest point differential of the tournament so far thanks to their 9-0 win over Slovakia in the tournament opener. Since then the American’s have beaten Norway 8-2 and Latvia 7-1.

While the lopsided final score would suggest a breezy game for Team USA, Latvia still managed to test American goaltender Nicholas Kempf, who made back-to-back saves on Latvian breakaways in the first frame. Trevor Connelly led the USA with four points (2 goals, 2 assists) and Teddy Stiga and James Hagens each added three points a piece.

Now, Team USA wraps pool play against Finland, who is similarly undefeated, and coming off a 4-0 shutout win over Latvia. Tied at the top of Group A, the winner of Tuesday’s match will decide the winner of the preliminary round, but both teams have already secured their spot in the quarterfinal.
