OROVILLE — Students and their parents braved the rain to one of very few Feather Fiesta Days events that wasn’t canceled Saturday, the St. Thomas the Apostle School Springfest.

The event featured kids games, a raffle, beer for the parents and an indoor wrestling match.

Saturday was supposed to be the biggest day of Oroville’s annual Feather Fiesta Days, but rainy weather led event organizers to cancel the pancake breakfast, the Feather Fiesta Gold Rush Car Show, the Feather Fiesta Days Parade and food provided by the Oroville Eagles Aerie FOE 196.

Kelly Floyd, St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School principal, said Springfest was cancelled last year due to rain — and the school considered cancelling it again this year for the same reason. However, the school ended up pushing through the weather partly because it received donations Floyd said they didn’t want to go to waste.

Grace Harrelson attended the event with her 7-year-old daughter, Scarlett Harrelson, who is attending St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School, and her 7-month-old daughter, Skyler Harrelson. Grace said her friends couldn’t believe she was attending the Springfest in the rain.

“It’s really not that bad, and they’re having fun,” Grace Harrelson said of her kids.

Floyd said her favorite part of her job is the students, families and staff. Floyd has 12 children who have all either graduated from St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School or are currently attending. What makes the school special is “God’s presence here,” Floyd said.

Jessica Madrigal, who helped organize the event, has three children attending St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School.

“I’ve never seen parents come together like they do here,” Madrigal said.

The Oroville Docent’s Craft Faire has moved from Saturday to Sunday at 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lott Home, 1067 Montgomery Street. Oroville’s first Food Truck Festival at Riverbend Park will continue noon to 6 p.m. at 50 Montgomery Street, with 12 food trucks and 30 vendors registered. And the fourth Annual Pioneer Poker Run will continue 8:30 a.m. today at the Oroville Convention Center parking lot, 1200 Myers Street.
